Although we’ve, so far, managed to escape the bulk of the hurricanes that have formed in the Atlantic, it doesn’t take a hurricane to cause wind damage. In fact, a strong thunderstorm with winds can do significant damage to your home’s roof any time of year. When you don’t give your roof the attention it needs after a storm, you can end up with a roof leak and significant damage inside your home. Wind damage, especially to shingle roofs can be significant.

Not All Wind Damage is Easy to Spot

Often after a hurricane or tropical storm, people notice missing shingles. It’s well known that when your shingles are missing you will end up with a roof leak. You also probably know to call your insurance company and report the claim and then call your roofing company to get their estimate on the repair. However, not all effects of the wind are so easy to see. Here are some other signs the wind has taken a toll on your roof:

• Lifted shingles – When the wind blows against one side of your home for an extended time, it can break the sealant that holds the shingles flat against your roof. With strong winds it can even bend them up. The longer the wind blows the shingles up, the more likely the lift is to become permanent Once the bond breaks and the shingle no longer lies flat, it’s hard for it to protect your home. Chances are good you have an insurance claim and need both your adjustor and roofer to visit.
• Curled shingles – Similar to a lifted shingle damage, a curled shingle often happens at edges and at roof protrusions and is less pronounced. Rather then the entire shingle lifting, just the edges lift. This is much more difficult for the untrained eye to notice. If you think that you have curling shingles after a storm, let your roofing company know, they’ll be able to advise you if you have wind damage and need to file an insurance claim.
• Misaligned shingles – Sometimes misaligned shingles are simply the result of poor installation practices; however, they can also be the sign of wind damage. If strong winds, especially straight-line winds, strike your roof they can move your shingles. If there’s not enough wind or the wind changes direction before it completely pulls the shingles off the roof, you may end up with misaligned shingles rather than missing ones. Your roofing company can evaluate whether it’s an installation or storm damage issues.

Storm Damage Happens to All Roofing Types

Although both metal and tile roofing generally handle strong winds better than asphalt shingles, they’re not immune to wind damage. Strong winds can blow off clay and concrete tiles and even bend metal roofing. A lot has to do with whether your roofing company used all the best installation methods for your roofing type.
