It may have felt like spring (and even summer) already for some time in our area, but officially spring arrives in a few weeks. If you’re putting together your spring building maintenance checklist, don’t forget about your roof. Here are three tips from your local commercial roofer that can help extend the life of your roof.

1.      Trim Palm Fronds and Tree Branches

Anything that overhangs your roof and/or drops debris on your roof can prematurely age it. When we get a strong wind and a tree branch repeatedly rubs your roof’s surface, it’s going to cause damage over time. And, if there’s a strong storm, a branch may fall onto your roof. You may think that having trees overhanging your roof will keep your building cooler and that may be true, but that shade may also promote mold growth which isn’t good for your roof’s surface.

2.      Clean Debris from the Roof’s Surface

If you have trees that overhang your roof, you probably have some debris that should be removed. Whether you have a steep slope or flat roof, debris can hasten the aging process. If you’ve had a new HVAC unit installed or any other work done on the roof, the workers may have left their trash. Plus, the wind and birds are known to leave debris in the strangest of places. If you haven’t checked and removed any debris since fall, it’s time to take care of it.

3.      Clean the Drains and Gutters

On steep slope roofs, clogged gutters do significant damage from the roof to the foundation. Keeping your gutters clean helps the water run off your roof away from the foundation. Clogged gutters can lead to rotting fascia, deteriorating shingles and issues beneath your foundation which will lead to you needing to call a local commercial roofer. It’s not an enjoyable task, but one that should be done at least twice a year.

Flat roofing has drains that need to be kept clear. If you keep your roof’s surface clear of debris, your drains shouldn’t become clogged, however, birds and rodents are known to create nests on roofs which can lead to a clogged drain which, in turn, leads to standing water and roof damage.
